Capri is a treasure chest full of treasures, rich in religious buildings and churches of considerable historical and artistic value.
Piazza Umberto I is dominated by the façade of the Church of St. Stephen, built in the late seventeenth century in the classic Baroque style, characterized by domes and vaults. Inside, the church houses an ancient Roman marble floor, which comes from the Villa of Emperor Tiberio, and the statue of St. Costanzo, patron saint of the island.
A few steps from the square, you come across the small, but wonderful, Church of St. Anna, the first parish of Capri, built in the heart of the medieval quarter in the twelfth century. It is decorated inside with magnificent fourteenth century frescoes.
Among the religious buildings built on the island, the Certosa di San Giacomo is worth a visit. Built in the Angevin period (1371), it represents the greatest example of monastic and medieval Caprese architecture. Today the ancient monastery is a museum that houses a collection of paintings by the German painter, K.W. Diefenbach.
Between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, two other important convents were built by Mother Serafina, a nun from Capri. She first founded the convent of the Teresiane, with the Church of SS. Salvatore in Capri, designed by Dioniso Lazzari. She then established a convent in Anacapri with the Church of San Michele, built by the famous Neapolitan architect Antonio Vaccaro. The Church of San Michele is considered to be among the highest expressions of Baroque art on the island, and is famous for the decoration of the majolica floor that represents the Earthly Paradise; a true masterpiece.
Not far from the church of San Michele, in the historic center of Anacapri, one can visit the church of St. Sofia, built in the sixteenth century, and still used as the parish today. It is characterized by an imposing facade with baroque features and an ancient bell tower. The statue of St. Anthony, patron saint of Anacapri, is preserved here.
Our tours will take you on unusual walks in the historic center to admire, among the old and characteristic streets, the main churches of the island that contain precious artistic masterpieces and important testimonies to the history of Capri.
